Everyone in the Portobello area should beware because there has been an explosion in the mouse population of late, and not the cute white ones either, these are small gray ones that have prodigious bowels and bladders, they also carry very nasty diseases.

Yes the increasing mouse population was one of the main motivations behind our current kitchen renovation. That and the fact that the previous owners seem to have built the extension over an ancient slug burial ground.

Crikey you ain’t arf fick aren’t you… like Punk never happened… Hawkwind were as Punk as they come…. never heard Death Trap or Robot… as a computer programmer I can understand you need to get out more

Thanks Paul, fair enough comment and I’ll admit that “like punk never happened” was more of a catchphrase that we used to use as a put down circa 78/79 about any band that had swirly psychedelic artwork.
Still they weren’t exactly the Stooges or Dolls or even the Small Faces (listen to their live stuff to see what I mean by that).
And you’re probably right, I should try to get out more often than when my own band happen to be playing!

Well what can I say, I do think you have led such a sheltered life,“like punk never happened” comment of the century. Hawkwind have been around for 40 years and are known all over the globe by old and young, they have played along side a lot of the punk bands we all know from the golden era of Punk 1976 through till now.Playing many if not all the great fesivals and free urban music scene for 3 decades. These were the stomping ground of a lot of these punks, pop heads, reggae and the ravers; along with the anti-Nazi league and Rock against racism through the eighties. you can also listen to Hawkwind in the late 70’s and early 80’s and they are quite different from the space rock hippy dudes you so wrongly label. they were very punk influenced. This band deserve some respect and accolade, they are still doing it, and doing it well. They are still selling out gigs and they appeal to old and the new breed of Hawkwind fans. I for one will be there enjoying every minute of the 40th anniversary gigs. space is deep my friend and full of wonders so open your mind and heart give them some respect they deserve it.

Yeah, I agree with Paul and Phil Peak. And as for getting round to writing about the Pink Fairies, maybe in the meantime you want to check out ‘Keep It Together! Cosmic Boogie with the Deviants and The Pink Fairies’. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Keep-Together-Cosmic-Deviants-Fairies/dp/190048661X

p.s. Whilst I’m here has anyone got a couple of spare tickets for sale for the Saturday night Hawkwind gig at Porchester Hall? Tix have sold out, and I was hoping to review it for a music mag I wrote for!

Hardly the Stooges? Musically early Hawkwind (say, Sapce Ritual live 72) is probably a lot closer to the Stooges than you think. I’m a big fan of both, obviously…

OK chaps - point taken and you’ve all piqued my interest. I give ‘em another listen.
For some reason I still think of them more in the same sentence as Gong than the Pistols though.
July 25th, 2009 at 11:56 am
Er … not that there’s anything wrong with Gong by the way, just in case any of you are watching!

Hi ive just been reading all your posts?.Ive been a Hawk fan for years and have just been to Devon for the weekend to see Hawkwind, Subhumans, Gong and now i find myself on my way to porchester to see a band that i think needs more respect and credit (Hawkwind)for the 40 years that they have given to the music industry .All i can say is 1 porchester will go down as one of the landmarks for Hawkwind the place that it all started notting hill so Mr Admin next time you write about a topic that you don`t know anything about do a little bit more research it may stop you looking a fool keep up the bad work and your last comment Quote just in case any of you are watching ? have no fear they will be watching but ready to correct you once more.If my post gets past Mr admin ? then feel free to comment but some how i dont think so.

I have had my say to the Admin so this is a question to the good people of notting hill can anyone tell me the best place to park my car near to porchester hall please.
August 26th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
Hi Daran,
I always let posts through that aren’t spam
Anyway, thanks for the comments - appreciate a good bit of banter on the site and of course hope everyone enjoys the gig.
As for parking, the best thing I can think of is to try the other side of Westbourne Grove. Round behind Whiteley’s is a square whose name escapes me at the moment, but you should be able to park there. I think it’s free after 6:30pm, but I’ll be going through there later so I’ll check then.
August 26th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
Right - here we go. As I said, over Westbourne Grove from Porchester Hall, behind Whiteley’s and to the west of Queensway there are some squares where you can park after 6:30 for free.
Read the signs very carefully though because their practically designed to catch you out. Some places are residents only till 10:30pm.

Oh yes - meant to mention that if all else fails (such as a 3pm start!) there’s always the car park on the roof of Whiteley’s, which probably works out cheaper than the meters anyway.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for your help.

Hi is Whiteley’s near porchester and does it stay open late ?. Ive looked on the net but it has no info about parking ? it tells you the history and other parts to look at in the area .
August 27th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
As luck would have it I’ll be passing nearby again today so I’ll take a quick detour and have a look. Any idea how late it’ll need to be?
August 27th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
And sorry, yes it’s very near Porchester, maybe 100 yards away.
August 27th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
Whiteley’s car park is open till midnight. Here are the full details:

[...] fantastic! My assertion that Hawkwind may not be entirely responsible for the birth of punk seems to have sparked something of an argument in the comments section of that [...]

Great couple of days, Hawkwind played an early set (2pm) then Huw Lloyd-Langton did some numbers (with Tim Blake and Dave Brock on some), then TOSH (Technicians of Spaceship Hawkwind) and 9pm, the Hawkwind main set (2hrs) - so much of the day, both days, was taken up with HW-related stuff. Excellent!
